Wind Energy Developments and Natura 2000
The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on how best to ensure that wind energy developments are compatible with the provisions of the Habitats and Birds Directives. It focusses in particular on the procedures to follow under Article 6 of the Habitats Directive when dealing with wind farm related plans and projects which could affect a Natura 2000 site and provides clarifications on certain key aspects of this approval process.

EU Guidance on wind energy development in accordance with the EU nature legislation
The Habitats Directive does not, a priori, exclude wind farm developments in or adjacent to Natura 2000 sites. These need to be judged on a case by case basis.
Protecting wildlife – and your investment, by VESTAS
"At Vestas, we see a future where wind power is on a par with oil and gas as a source of energy. This means increasing public understanding and acceptance of turbines by winning the hearts and minds of local communities. It also means making it easier to
obtain building permits for new wind farms.
We have always taken the health and environmental impacts of wind farms very seriously. Some species of bats are endangered and protected – but in certain areas, a single turbine can cause up to fifty fatalities each year.
That’s why we have invested heavily to develop our Increased Cut-In Wind Speed (ICIWS) bat protection system. ICIWS has reduced bat mortality by more than fiftypercent in trials, and in some cases by as much as ninety percent.."
